Extra Extra

This past Saturday I got to be an extra in a short film that will appear during the Albuquerque Local Shorts Film Festival. I had thought I was just going to be just a face in the crowd, walking through the background scenery. What actually happened was that I was one of about six other people that got to appear in a ton of scenes for a sort of spoken word piece. We went all around Nob Hill and the Civic Center, filming all sorts of crazy scenarios while Marianne performed her piece. Then they’ll edit it all together, music video style.

One guy was dressed in a polar bear costume. Let me tell you, if you want to get attention and adoration, suit up as a polar bear and stroll down Central. People were coming up, wanting their picture taken with Nevada the Bear. It was a blast walking around downtown beside a polar bear, acting like I did this every day.

Tomatoes

Today I purchased a tomato plant starter kit, took it home and set it up in the back patio. These Big Beef tomatoes promise fruit of unusual size and quantity. Just the sort of thing to bolster my gardening confidence. With any luck, I’ll be handing out tomatoes in no time!

Great new taste!

I noticed when I tossed the spent carton of orange juice that it boasted a “Great New Taste!” As far as I could tell it tasted like orange juice. Was I missing some subtle flavor? Was I not a true connoisseur of juice?

But isn’t labelling orange juice with “Great New Taste!” like putting a sign by a rose bush stating “Great New Smell!” ? What could possibly be happening in that orange grove except perhaps injections of yummy DNA?

Survey

Surveys and quizzes abound on MySpace and I have become quite addicted to them. As with most things I like, I eventually had to create my own. I present to you the Drey Survey.

1. You are walking alone on a forest path when you come upon what you are certain is a portal leading to some other world. You sense that it will close soon with no guarantee of ever opening again. Do you go through the portal? Why?

2. In what situation is it acceptable to tell a lie?

3. What manner of death would you find the most unpleasant?

4. What is a recurring theme in your dreams and how does it apply to your waking life?

5. You discover a video file on your computer. The file name is TrueLove.avi. It is 10 seconds long. What would you see if you played the file?

6. You are successful at something in life, but you may be reluctant to call it “success,” reserving that label for goals you have yet to achieve. What is that success?

7. What is your most irrational fear? What is your most rational one?

8. You see a man seated at a restaurant. A small globe of blue flame hovers above his palm. When he notices you watching, the globe evaporates and he turns his attention to the menu. What is the most likely explanation for this event? What do you wish to be true in this case?

9. You wake up one morning to find a digital timer grafted to your chest, just above your heart. It immediately starts counting down from twenty-four hours. How do you spend the time between twenty-four and zero? How is this different from the way you spend time now?

10. You are cleaning out your attic and find an old shoebox you’ve never seen before. Written on the lid in your own handwriting is the phrase “You are ready for this now.” What is inside the box?

11. In the future, enlightenment is available in an over the counter gel capsule. Its effects are indistinguishable from enlightenment gained through years of seeking. Do you take the pill?

12. You want to stop doing that One Thing, but you don’t. Why?

13. What question is missing from this survey?

Mullet

I dreamt that when I got my hair cut yesterday that I had received a mullet and it did not show itself until this morning. I lay in bed, caught in half-sleep, afraid to get out and behold my mullet in the mirror. I speculated about what could be done to restore my hair and dignity. Would I have to get all my hair cut shorter to compensate? But then I had to pee and I woke up completely. No mullet! Whew!

Dummy!

I just tried to cut and paste a friend’s mailing address from Outlook to a handwritten post-it note. Didn’t work too well.

Bank Dream

I enter the Bank of America. It looks like a college library, with numerous cubicles for studying. I need to deposit a check. Instead of using an ATM or a teller, I am required to use this antiquated system which seems to combine an old fashioned carbon copier and a morse code transmitter. I see from the transaction logs that I have been here before. In fact, I am the only one who has ever deposited a check here before.

I have a problem getting the machine to work, so I approach the woman at the customer service desk. She informs me that the transaction I am trying to make is impossible. I ask “Isn’t this where I can deposit a check?” I am puzzled as to why a bank will not allow this most basic of transactions. The woman refuses to answer any of my questions. She just stares at me silently and eventually puts her head down on her desk. [Note: In waking life, I become very scared if someone does not answer me or acknowledge me when asked a question. There is something terrifying about being utterly ignored when I am speaking.]

I demand to see a manager so that I can make them aware of their employee’s poor customer service and unprofessional behavior. I end up talking to a security guard. As I am speaking to him, he runs away, zig-zagging through the bank like a child on the playground. I decide to leave the bank, thinking they have lost a customer. For some reason, I turn back and go back inside, but the bank has been abandoned for years, dust and cobwebs draping across overturned chairs and empty desks.

Lost

Damn them.

Episode 3

And so it ends. Having seen very little to spoil any part of the movie, I was able to enjoy a Star Wars movie with a fresh perspective. I’ve come to judge these films in a class by themselves, comparing them to each other. For if they were to set foot into the larger realm of fantasy and sci-fi cinema, they are instantly decimated on several fronts by Lord of the Rings, Firefly, any number of anime series, the list goes on.

From a technical aspect, Episode 3 seemed to be about pushing the envelope in terms of scope, speed and detail. Once you have mastered the massive completely CGI set piece, there is little room for innovation. So when there’s an epic space battle, the results are astonishing and no one does it better than ILM. Lightsaber battles have also been perfected in this film and it is difficult to imagine any improvements in this arena. The fights are almost too fast, an impossible blur of flashing light.

From an acting standpoint, I felt that everyone turned it up a notch since Episode 2. Ewan definitely inhabited the role of Obi-wan this time around. Ian was perfect as Palpatine/Sidious. Even Hayden was tolerable, though slightly stiff. A big disappointment was Natalie Portman who was given nothing to work with and was downgraded to Anakin’s hand-wringing wife.

I’ve always felt that Lucas is more of a technician than a director. He has this vision in his head and at last he has the technology to translate that into a film. This visual translation seems foremost in his mind. The transmission of any kind of story seems to be secondary. While his handling of the overarching story is genius, he falters in the details, writing dialogue heavy with exposition, encouraging only passable wooden performances from his actors. If only the writers from Knights of the Old Republic could have had a crack at the script, we could have seen something more elegant. Instead, the story plods methodically towards its inexorable conclusion, words falling from the character’s mouths simply because they have to.

This is not to say that there are no brilliant moments. The seduction of Anakin, the scene at the opera, Obi-wan’s confrontation with Padme, Vader’s first words… these stuck with me. The sense of descending darkness is also effective, culminating in Obi-wan turning his back on Anakin’s charred and mutilated form.

The visual orchestration of this film was also very powerful, with Lucas quoting scenes from the original trilogy, giving moments a deep resonance. Seeing Palpatine seated on the throne-like chair as Anakin and Dooku crossed sabers in that mirror of Return of the Jedi’s Luke/Vader duel gave me chills. So too the scene of Owen Lars gazing into the twin Tatooine sunset…beautiful.

On the whole, it was a good experience which I enjoyed more than the first two films. While technical excellence won out over passion and artful storytelling, the epic themes of Star Wars were made complete in this film. The nature of Anakin’s fall is revealed and his redemption in Jedi is made much more satisfying now that we know the depth of the descent.

Catapult

Catapult
– Counting Crows

All of a sudden she disappears
just yesterday she was here
somebody tell me if I am sleeping
someone should be with me here
(cause I don’t wanna be alone)

I wanna be the knife that cuts into my hand
and I wanna be scattered from here in this catapult
What a big baby, won’t somebody save me please
You won’t find nobody home

all of these quiet battered voices
wait for the hunger to come
we got little revolvers and stupid choices
and no one to say when we’re done
(Well I don’t wanna bring you down)

I wanna be the light that burns out your eyes
`cause I know there’s little things about me
that would sing in the silence of so much rejection
in every connection I make
I can’t find nobody home
I wanna be the last thing you hear when you’re falling asleep….
